Dear opponauts, I’m curious, which is your favorite Final Fantasy game in the following categories; best story, best gameplay, best overall experience? I’m looking for your honest opinions, and ties are allowed.

For me, best story is tough to decide, but I really like FFIX the unsung hero. It was straight forward and wasn’t too overly complicated. FFX is up there too. Best gameplay, hands down, FFII. The more you used a specific weapon or magic spell, the more proficient you got at it; no leveling up. It was a fantastic idea and I loved it. Also you could dual wield a axe and a sword, how is that not cool?

Best overall experience, for me, would be FFIX. Great engaging story, easy to understand gameplay mechanics with just the right amount of depth; I would definitely recommend it. As always, a close second is FFX. It’s just that good of a game.

Now I haven’t played all the games from FFI to FFX, but these are the ones that I enjoyed from the ones I have played and/ or beat.

What about you oppo?

FFIX has always been my favorite too. It never really gets the credit it deserves. Such a great story, which makes for a fantastic gaming experience because these games are all about the story. I loved the characters in it.

I was a big fan of FFX for actual gameplay, mainly because Blitz Ball was awesome.

FFVII is probably the best overall experience, because it was the FF when I was growing up, so it’s the most nostalgic/quintessential FF game for me. FFVIII is up there too.

I’m going to be the stereotypical fanboy and say FF7. The story, the Materia system, the characters, the locations...it’s probably my all time favorite game.

I should probably give 9 another look, I got like an hour into it back in the day and then stopped playing when my PlayStation died.

I'm gonna agree, but mainly because it was the first modern, platform-based version. I wasted MANY hours on that one. None of the others appealed to me much.

FFIX is also my favorite... Then FF6 (FF3 for you guys...) is in second place for me.

You definitely need to give IX another shot. It’s soooo good.

FFVII was decent, but I’m not too crazy for it. Idk, it seemed to drag on at times, but they may just be me.

For me, it’s mainly just the nostalgia factor.

At the time I preferred playing VIII, and IX will always be the best IMO.

FF6 is the only one that I have t tried playing. I own it though. Just started up a new file of FF3, I'm iffy on the job gameplay element, :/.

FF9 is the old school world with the newer game dynamics, best way to express it I think.

It's sad because each new installment kept changing the gameplay, not a little, but usually a complete overhaul. So if you like FF7, FF8 was not similar, :(.

Yeah, I jumped in after FF9 was made, and I borrowed copies of the game so I could play it. Never got around to FF7 until I bought it on the PlayStation network a few years ago.

The summons in FFX were fantastic, best part of the gameplay, plus they also served as a shield for the party, lol.

I just think RPGs got too complex for their own good. I'm an old-school Dragon Warrior NES guy. I also liked a first-person Genesis one called Shining in the Darkness and it's third person sequel(s), Shining Force. Those are my kind of games — pick them up, work a little, put them down.

Probably the junction system. In order to do various commands, you had to junction a summon on a character. It was creative idea but was tedious because if you only has a few summons you had to constant change who had then. Plus you spent a lot of time drawing magic skills from enemies, which was a chore. Then junction the magic skill to an attribute to boost it.

But wait! You have 99 Curaga for one person! The rest of the team needs it too to be at max health. So you have to keep drawing the skill from enemies to have a good/decent team. Oh crud, someone just got hurt, use Curaga. Now I my health decreases...etc.

like I said, a chore. But still a good story though, :).

Same here. And apparently Dragon Quest is on iOS now? Of course Square Enix has a ridiculous price tag.

Another great game, Golden Sun for the GBA and the DS. It's amazingly good and straightforward. Highly recommend it.

FFX for sure, the ending damn near made me cry. IX definitely is up there, with some great themes and story. I never play FFVIII but I watched a friend beat it and that was pretty awesome. FFVII is a classic so that goes without saying.

THE MUSIC! Man sometimes you can just go on youtube and listen to it, it is that good. I feel that the music of the old games is underrated, hell even Zelda games had some good music.

For me, best story is FFVII but only because it was my first and invited me into the FF series.

For best game play and overall, I remember FFIX being very easy to play / control, and it was very engaging and fun.

Thanks! Oh, and I forgot to mention that I think Zelda for SNES (A Like to the Past) was the greatest RPG/adventure game ever. Perfect balance of RPG, action, complexity, and replay value. That's a tough act to follow.

I think the nostalgia factor is the reason FF7 is so popular. I wonder if it'll hold up when replayed?

I remember playing some SNES FF games but I don’t remember much about them, same thing with the Game Boy versions but they are highly recommended so I know they were good.

I feel like PS1 really helped give RPG makers the tech they needed to tell their stories. So many great RPGs on that system.

Ever played Legend of Dragoon? That was an amazing game, if you haven’t I highly highly recommend getting it on the PS network.

Lol nah it’s cool. I just looked it up and it’s $5.99 on the PS network. If you ever find yourself in need of a game to play I definitely suggest it.

One thing I loved about it is your character upgrades and how your specials change. Here’s a video of the main character Dart and all his specials/magic:

7! I played many of the rest, but 7 is the only one I really remember. It was so engaging that I feel like I *lived* it. Though, I’m not that excited about the remake because I think the fond memories from the original games/movies are best left alone.

FF3 (US release) is the best. Period. Take your polygons and throw them in the garbage. A good RPG doesn’t need that shit.

Best story? No, best stories . All the characters get properly fleshed out and have real motivations, not just a collection of rando sub-superheros, tagging along with a main character. There is an overarching plot, but the characters themselves have differing perspectives that color the progress of the game.

Best gameplay? Ok, it’s not exactly immersive, and the menu system can actually put you to sleep sometimes (especially when grinding for XP), but as gameplay goes, the controls are dead-simple, and basically get out of the way of the story, which is what you’re after anyway. But it’s involved enough that you don’t just feel like you’re pushing a button to progress to the next movie scene (I’m looking at you, FFVII). Plus, lots of puzzles which are apropos to the storyline, and lots of switching between parties in different parts of the world. Plus, NO SITTING & WAITING AT LOADING SCREENS.

I still have the PlayStation memory card with a dozen or so save points throughout the game, including the last save point before the final boss battle.
